Welcome! ˇdé la bienvenida! What you are about to view are nearly 200 black and white images of Cuba, its people, Fidel Castro and his comandantes. These pictures were taken by Alejandro Saavedra (pictured, left) in 1959. In fact, the images on this site are not actually pictures, but rather the original large-format negatives scanned into the database. All photographs in this collection were taken during the first quarter of 1959, some taken in Cuba in January, and the rest having been taken in New York City; capturing Cienfuegos' visit to the United Nations in February, and Castro's trip in April. The collection is broken up in segments as such, and expressed thusly in the "images" navigation bar to the left. You can navigate the gallery by clicking on a specific time period, and then letting the "slideshow" function automatically move you through the photographs; or you can click on the "thumbnail" of an image to get more detail - in both the viewing of the photograph and in the caption provided. Please note that not all photographs have captions and that captions are not available while using the "slideshow" function. Inquiries by authors, filmmakers, scholars, historians, and others, are welcome. All images are available for use, and are managed by The Image Works photography agency. If there are any inaccuracies in the descriptions, or perhaps you may have information to add, please let me know. I value your informed input! Please be aware that all material contained in this collection is copyrighted. No permisions are expressed or given in the viewing of the materials on this site. Duplication, publication, or presentation of said materials in any media - now known or hereafter devised - without permission, is forbidden and punishable by applicable law.
